"The heralds left here pricking up and down,
Now ringing trumpets loud and clarion;
There is no more to say, but West and East
In going the spears fall soundly into rest
In goes the sharpest spear into the side.
There seen men who can joust and who can ride..."

Theatrical Jousting Companies

Hanlon-Lees Action Theater

Founded by Kent Shelton in 1979, and possibly the oldest theatrical jousting troupe in the United States. I worked for them 1987 - 1993.

Noble Cause Productions

Owned and operated by my good friend Bryan Beard. Bryan and I started out together as squires in 1987, initially working together for the Hanlon-Lees and years later for New Edge Productions, Inc. , as well as for his own jousting troupe, Noble Cause Productions.

Knights of Arkley

Knights of Royal England

The Silver Knights

New Riders of the Golden Age

Founded by Kelly Bailey in 1982. First of the "heavy" U.S. troupes.

The Freelancers

Owned by Roy Cox, founded 1990. Another of the "heavy" American troupes.  A professional theatrical group which also hosts competitive sport tournaments at their shows.

Seattle Knights

Owned and operated by Dameon Willoch, they perform mostly in the Pacific Northwest. I worked with them at an event in Hartford in 2002.

Impact Productions

Founded in 2002 by co-owners John Lukas and Eric Micheal. I worked with both of them with the Hanlon-Lees and New Edge Productions. John was formerly my squire, way back when. Formally disbanded in 2006.

Knights of Avalon

The Devil's Horsemen

Black Heart Jousting

Founded in 2003 by Steve Jones, former New Rider of the Golden Age and creator of the 'Nature of Mercy' show. Current status unknown.

Roundtable Productions

Owned and operated since 1998 by Rob Earhart, with whom I also formerly worked for New Edge Productions (Rob is another of my ex-squires).

Paragon Jousting and Adventure Theater

A troupe that performs in conjunction with Roundtable Productions and the Autumn Tree Jousters.  I believe this group sprang out of Rob Earhart's tenure at the Maine Renaissance Faire.

Knights of Gloriana

Basically a tribute website to Lloyd Clark's now mostly defunct joust team, which performed at the Bristol Renaissance Faire for one season. Lloyd now performs with the King's Champions.

Knights of the Azure Cross

Tournament Jousting Teams

While most of these groups do "perform" for the public, they do so by engaging in mostly unchoreographed displays of jousting as a competitive sport.

Order of the Boar

Order of the Flame

Knights of the Black Pheonix

Destrier

The Freelancers (USA)

This is the same group run by Roy Cox, already listed above. I include them here again for the sake of accuracy, since most of them also joust competitively in a sporting capacity at various events.

The Norwegian Freelancers

Full-Tilt

Palm Beach Jousting Club

Compagnie Hackamores

An excellent Belgian team managed by Frederic Piraux, they perform in Europe and compete under the auspices of the Euro Jousting League.

Historical Tournament Reenactments

 The Red Company - 1471

Knights of St.Anthony

Knights of the Wild Rose

Knights of the Northern Realm

Lance of St.Eligius

Sport Jousting Associations

As the name implies, these are organizations dedicated to the furtherance of modern horse-to-horse jousting in a competitive sporting capacity.

International Jousting Association

The original organization of this name, founded in Great Britain in the mid 1980's (possibly descended from Max Diamond's now-defunct British Jousting Association) and revived in New Zealand in the 1990's.

International Jousting Association (California)

Not related to the other organization of the same name listed above. Apparently defunct.

American Jousting Alliance

Created by James Zoppe to further competitive jousting in the United States.

Euro Jousting League

A Pan-European organization which is dedicated to bringing together various European teams for performance and friendly competition.

Competitive Ring Jousting

The medieval sport of "running at the ring" is still alive and well, and is in fact the official state sport of Maryland. This sport consists of lancing only at suspended rings rather than human targets.

National Jousting Association

Maryland Jousting Tournament Association

Armor and Weaponry

Starfire Swords, Ltd.

Zak is an old friend who continues to supply various joust companies across the country. I've fought with his weaponry for years.

Museum Replicas, Ltd.

Badger Blades

To date the toughest replica swords I've ever used. Badger Blades remains the preferred swordmaker of the jousters of New Edge Productions, Inc.

Illusion Armoring

The Arador Armour Library

Baltimore Knife & Sword Co.

Owned and operated by my friend Kerry Stagmer. I own half a dozen of his beautiful blades, which were the preferred weapon of the jousters of Matt Mansour's company, Heroes & Villains, Ltd.

Valentine Armouries

The Ring Lord Chain Mail

Sword & Stone Weapons and Armor

Albion Armourers

Stahlhelm Armoury

Highly recommended by the New Zealand sport joust team, the Order of the Boar. Stahlhelm fabricated armor for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films.

Robert MacPherson, Armourer

Christian Fletcher, Swordsmith

Impact Swords

Owned and operated by jouster John Lukas, former co-owner of the now-defunct Impact Productions. Present status unknown.

General Interest

Introduction to Mounted Combat

An excellent four article series written by Richard Alvarez, my former fencing instructor and joust partner. Written as the basis for an eventual book on the subject.

American Jouster

Website of Richard Alvarez's award-winning documentary of the same name, filmed during the 2004 joust season in Texas. I'm in it.

Knights of the Guild

An interesting organization combining knightly combat demonstrations with an educational program for children. Run by Dr. Randall Parr.

Mansour Designs

Owned by Matt Mansour, freelance jouster and former director of Heroes & Villains, Ltd. Innovative leather art and wearable metal sculpture.

Renaissance Magazine

Quarterly periodical for the medievally-inclined reenactor and attendees of period themed events. Edited by Kim Guarnaccia, an old friend of mine.

I occasionally write for the magazine, and appeared on the cover of issue #3 way back in 1996. The issue contained a feature article authored by myself, detailing the formation and early years of the Hanlon-Lees Action Theater.
